Mahjong

Not all games are physical but they are always mental. I guess that’s what keeps us going back to certain games. 12 years ago I was looking for a pastime or activity that would ease the mind of a busy mum, while at the same time also engage me socially. Mahjong lessons were being offered, and while I had never heard of the game, I was keen to learn.

Mahjong is a Chinese tile game that one interpretation says originated during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Another account says that it was invented by a Chinese General to amuse the soldiers. I guess the myth behind its origin is part of the allure of the game.

It is a rummy-like game played with colorful tiles instead of cards. There are 152 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols and the players are supposed to complete a sequence that is pre-set yearly in a card released by the National Mah Jongg. https://www.nationalmahjonggleague.org You draw and discard tiles in order to complete a combination.

The sound of the tiles, the clattering, the colors of the symbols and their names are all very seductive and part of the enjoyment of the game. And, as in every game, chance plays a big role in Maahj!

I never knew it could be so much fun! It made me think outside the box, be creative with my tiles and forced me to consistently think quickly! And the bonus? All the friends I made! The table of friends became a group therapy session with lots of laughs and inside jokes.

In the West, it was considered a grandmother’s game or old Chinese men’s game. However, it is back in trend! I see more and more people joining Mahjong groups looking for a brainy social gathering. Playing Mahjong is a time we put our electronic devices away and share each other’s company and our stories instead!
